Meta is intensifying its efforts to expand the reach of its generative AI-powered products. The company is currently testing the Meta AI chatbot with users in countries like India on WhatsApp, and is also experimenting with integrating Meta AI into Instagram’s search bar. This integration aims to facilitate both AI-driven conversations and enhanced content discovery. Users can initiate a search query that leads to a direct message conversation with Meta AI, where they can ask questions or use pre-loaded prompts. This interface is notably similar to that of Perplexity AI’s search screen, as pointed out by the startup’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas. Additionally, Meta AI can assist users in discovering new content on Instagram, such as Reels. Some users have reported being able to ask Meta AI for Reels suggestions, indicating that Meta is leveraging generative AI to surface new content across its platforms. While Meta has confirmed the experiment, the company has yet to clarify the specifics of the generative AI technology employed. This move underscores Meta’s ambition to improve Instagram’s search functionality and overall discoverability, potentially positioning it as a stronger competitor to TikTok. Moreover, Instagram is exploring a feature called “Visibility off Instagram” to include posts in search engine results, further enhancing content visibility.
