The European Council has recently approved a pioneering law, the Artificial Intelligence Act, aimed at standardizing AI regulations across Europe. This act employs a “risk-based” approach, categorizing AI systems by their potential risks to ensure safe and trustworthy AI deployment. High-risk AI applications require authorization and must meet stringent requirements to operate within the EU. Conversely, AI systems posing minimal risk face minimal transparency obligations. The act also notably bans certain AI practices considered too risky, such as social scoring and predictive policing based on profiling. With hefty fines linked to global turnover, the act aims to enforce compliance, potentially influencing similar legislative efforts globally, including in the US. This legislation is expected to both protect EU citizens’ fundamental rights and stimulate AI innovation and investment.
