Onsemi, a leading supplier of silicon carbide chips, has unveiled a new lineup of chips designed to make data centers that power artificial intelligence services more energy efficient. By borrowing technology already used in electric vehicles, Onsemi aims to reduce power losses in data centers, which can account for up to 12% of electricity consumption. This innovation comes at a critical time, as AI data centers are expected to consume massive amounts of power in the near future, with estimates suggesting up to 1,000 terawatt hours in less than two years. According to Simon Keeton, president of the power solutions group at Onsemi, a 1% reduction in power losses could be enough to power a million houses for a year. This breakthrough has significant implications for tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, which could benefit from reduced energy costs and a lower environmental impact.
