As the world gears up for a massive election season in 2024, with over 60 countries set to hold elections, concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence to disrupt campaigns and elections are growing. According to Scott Warren, a visiting fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, election officials are already preparing for an AI-fueled election season. Warren notes that AI poses both threats and opportunities in the upcoming elections. On the one hand, AI can be used to spread misinformation and disinformation, including deep fakes and fake news articles. On the other hand, AI can be used to provide more information to people about how to participate in elections and to clean up voter rolls. Warren is hopeful that people are talking about this threat earlier than they did with social media, and there is bipartisan support for addressing the issue. However, he also notes that election officials are still in the early stages of understanding what can be done with AI.
