The integration of artificial intelligence in South Carolina classrooms is on the horizon, thanks to the efforts of educators like David Thornton, a teacher at Spartanburg School District Three. As a member of the Southern Regional Education Board’s Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Education, Thornton is working to make AI accessible in schools, with the goal of enhancing student learning and preparing students for AI-related careers. The commission, comprising 65 members including Governor Henry McMaster, lawmakers, teachers, and business owners, aims to navigate the use of AI in K-12 schools, providing teachers with tools to plan lessons and promote student learning, as well as supporting students with learning disabilities. If successful, AI could be integrated into classrooms within the next year, revolutionizing the way students learn and paving the way for a more technologically advanced workforce. As Thornton puts it, AI will “force students to a higher learning” and create jobs, making it an exciting development for the future of education in South Carolina.
