The recent advancements in artificial intelligence have inadvertently assigned educators a major homework assignment for the summer: adapting their teaching methods and assignments to accommodate the new AI features that students will bring to classrooms in the fall. Educators are already struggling to keep up with ChatGPT and other AI tools, and the latest announcements from major AI companies will require even greater adjustments to preserve academic integrity and accurately assess student learning.

The free version of OpenAI’s latest chatbot, GPT-4, can accept not just text but also spoken voice and visual inputs, making it a “game-changing shift” that will challenge educators to rethink their assignments and teaching methods. Many smaller companies have also launched AI-powered tools targeted at educational uses, which can create audio recordings of lectures and automatically generate summaries and flashcards. While these tools promise to save time on lesson planning and administrative tasks, they also raise concerns about maintaining academic integrity and encouraging students to engage actively in the learning process.

In my opinion, the key to navigating this new landscape lies in finding a balance between embracing the benefits of AI and preserving the essential human aspects of education. By incorporating more active learning strategies and “intentional friction” into their classes, educators can encourage students to engage more deeply with the material and develop essential skills that AI tools cannot replicate. As the education sector continues to evolve, it is crucial for educators, policymakers, and tech companies to work together to ensure that AI is used to augment human capabilities, rather than replace them.
