The last decade has seen artificial intelligence (AI) becoming a central figure in the technological landscape, intertwining deeply with human life. AI’s integration spans various aspects, from nudging us to complete emails to verifying human identity during logins. Given its profound impact, it’s crucial to explore AI’s potential and limitations, particularly in mental health care. AI has shown promise in personalizing psychological interventions by analyzing extensive data sets, tailoring support to individual needs. Notably, AI-generated messages have made recipients feel more “heard” than those from untrained humans, indicating AI’s superior emotion detection capabilities. This positions AI as a potential tool for scalable, cost-effective social support solutions. Post-pandemic, the demand for remote mental health care has surged, and AI has emerged as a key player in making these services more accessible. By lowering the stigma associated with seeking help, AI enables individuals to engage with mental health care more comfortably from home. However, as we develop this “digital species,” it’s vital to address our own biases and traumas to ensure AI reflects the best of humanity, fostering values of interconnectedness and wholeness. This approach could prevent future AI technologies from exacerbating human greed and environmental depletion.
