The SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s new Transportation Research AI Lab (TRAIL) is pioneering innovative solutions to make traveling safer and more efficient. Located in Donovan Hall, the lab focuses on four key areas: operation, safety, sustainability, and resiliency, utilizing data-driven AI and machine learning solutions. With projects ranging from optimizing traffic light timing to reducing red-light running, to improving safety in work zones using virtual reality, TRAIL is at the forefront of transportation research. The lab, founded by Abolfazi Karimpour, assistant professor of transportation engineering, will not only advance transportation systems but also provide hands-on experience for students in transportation analysis and data analysis. As the lab expands its capabilities with emerging technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles and virtual reality sets, it’s poised to drive forward innovative solutions for the future of transportation.
