The Air Force and Space Force have introduced a new AI tool named the Non-classified Internet Protocol Generative Pre-training Transformer (NIPRGPT) to enhance access to information and explore the necessity of generative AI within the Department of the Air Force (DAF). The AI chatbot aims to assist airmen and guardians with tasks such as correspondence, research, and coding while ensuring a secure online environment. Venice Goodwine, DAF’s chief information officer, emphasized the importance of modernizing tools for the workforce and providing flexibility for skill development. NIPRGPT has shown promising results during its development phase, and the department plans to collaborate with commercial partners to evaluate its effectiveness. The initiative is part of a broader effort to foster innovation and experimentation within the DAF. Derived from the Dark Saber software platform, NIPRGPT is a testament to the DAF’s commitment to deploying cutting-edge technology. As the platform evolves, it will undergo rigorous testing to determine its suitability for various use cases.
