Mistral AI, a burgeoning player in the artificial intelligence arena, has successfully closed its Series B funding round, raising €600 million (approximately $640 million) in a combination of equity and debt. This round, led by General Catalyst, has catapulted the company’s valuation to a remarkable $6 billion. The startup, which previously garnered attention with a $112 million seed round, aims to establish itself as a European contender against AI titans like OpenAI and Anthropic. Co-founded by former employees of Meta and Google’s DeepMind, Mistral AI focuses on developing foundational models intended to compete with leading models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, Anthropic’s Claude 3, and Meta’s Llama 3.
Mistral AI offers both proprietary and open-source models, including Mistral 7B, Mistral 8x7B, and Mistral 8x22B, released under the Apache 2.0 license. Its flagship proprietary models, like Mistral Large, are marketed as API-first products. Additionally, the company has launched Codestral, a generative AI model for code with a restrictive, non-commercial license. Mistral AI also provides Le Chat, a free chat assistant, and has formed distribution partnerships with cloud providers like Microsoft Azure.
The funding round saw participation from a diverse array of investors, including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, and Salesforce Ventures, among others. Mistral AI’s CEO, Arthur Mensch, expressed optimism about the new investment, highlighting the company’s potential to push the boundaries of AI technology while maintaining its independence. With this substantial financial backing, Mistral AI is poised to convert its impressive engineering feats into substantial revenue streams by attracting corporate clients.
