The recent bipartisan bill introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell and Jerry Moran aims to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence among small businesses, particularly those in underserved regions. The legislation, titled the Small Business Artificial Intelligence Training and Toolkit Act, assigns new responsibilities to the Commerce Department and the Small Business Administration to provide AI training resources to small businesses. This move is crucial in today’s digital age, as small businesses are the backbone of the US economy, making up 99% of all businesses and driving economic growth and innovation. The bill proposes that the Commerce secretary work with the SBA administrator to create AI training resources, which will be provided through grants and private sector donations. The Commerce Department will also submit regular reports to Congress on the program’s progress. I believe this legislation is a step in the right direction, as it recognizes the importance of equipping small businesses with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the 21st-century marketplace.
