The oil and gas industry is embracing generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) to boost efficiency, empower line workers, and reduce accidents and greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike traditional AI, Gen AI can analyze exponentially more data, making it a game-changer for the industry. The technology can be employed broadly across the workforce, beyond just programmers and data analysts. Gen AI can help identify oil and gas deposits, reduce costs, and improve predictive maintenance. Digital twins, computer-modeled replicas of facilities, can also be used to assess operational issues and mitigate hazards. Next-generation chatbots can assist employees on the ground, providing quick diagnoses and solutions to problems. The technology has the potential to reduce risk, improve decision-making, and facilitate maintenance and repair work. However, running Gen AI requires significant amounts of electricity, mainly in data centers, which could offset some of the environmental benefits.
