The state of Oklahoma, in partnership with Google, has launched a new AI Essentials course aimed at equipping residents with essential artificial intelligence (AI) skills. Announced on May 30, this free course requires no prior AI experience or degrees, making it accessible to a wide audience. The initiative is part of Governor Kevin Stitt’s broader strategy to position Oklahoma as a national leader in AI. The course will teach participants how to use AI responsibly and ethically while providing hands-on experience that can be applied across various industries. The goal is to help residents upskill, making them more competitive in the job market, whether they are looking to negotiate higher salaries, learn new skills, or re-enter the workforce. The initiative ties into a World Economic Forum estimate that 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025 due to increasing tech adoption. Oklahoma aims to track the course’s impact by monitoring completion rates and participant feedback, and is particularly focused on encouraging rural community involvement. Nearly 2,000 people signed up within the first week, demonstrating high demand. This course builds on Google’s ongoing efforts in Oklahoma to improve digital skills and aligns with the state’s broader efforts, including the formation of the Task Force on AI and Emerging Technologies and the introduction of the Generative AI for Educators course in several public school districts.
