Amazon has announced a commitment of up to $230 million to support startups developing generative AI-powered applications, with $80 million allocated to the second AWS Generative AI Accelerator program. This initiative aims to position AWS as the go-to cloud infrastructure for AI startups, providing compute credits that cannot be transferred to other providers like Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure. The program will also offer startups access to Nvidia experts and technology, as well as entry into Nvidia’s Inception program, which offers additional resources and investor connections.
The accelerator program has seen significant growth, expanding from 10 startups receiving up to $300,000 in credits each last year to a larger investment this year. Amazon’s broader investments in generative AI include the $100 million AWS Generative AI Innovation Center and free credits for startups using major AI models. Despite these efforts, Amazon is perceived as lagging behind competitors in the generative AI space, as evidenced by delays in launching its own generative AI model and challenges within its Alexa division. Additionally, Amazon missed early investment opportunities in leading AI startups like Cohere and Anthropic, later securing a co-investment in Anthropic with Google. Regulatory scrutiny from agencies like the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and European policymakers adds another layer of complexity to Amazon’s AI investment strategy.
