This article tells the story of Jackson 2bears, a Kanien’kehà:ka multimedia artist, who has created an immersive experience, “Ne:Kahwistará:ken Kanónhsa’kówa í:se Onkwehonwe,” which brings to life the Haudenosaunee creation story. The project is a vivid retelling of the story of Sky Woman, who fell from the sky and created the earth with the help of animals. The experience is set in a virtual recreation of a traditional longhouse, which is not only a dwelling but also a spiritual and cultural center where creation myths are shared. The project was developed in collaboration with Thru the RedDoor, an Indigenous-owned media company, and the Co-Creation Studio at MIT’s Open Documentary Lab. The immersive experience connects storytelling to the physical landscape and offers a shared space for community members to gather. The power of collaboration is highlighted in this project, which challenges the notion of the singular author and promotes a collective approach to storytelling. The article also touches on the importance of preserving Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices in the digital age.
