CALS IT and the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI) are collaborating with Lenovo to improve sensor data collection and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in agriculture. Lenovo, a global leader in computing technologies, enhances CALS IT’s research capabilities through their expertise. Key figures from Lenovo, including Vice President Scott Tease and Chief Data Scientist David Ellison, visited the Plant Science Building to explore collaborative “AI for good” projects. This partnership extends beyond hardware acquisition, offering strategic support in bioinformatics, phenotyping, and large language model processing. Lenovo’s AI Innovators Program allows CALS IT to test sample workloads in their data center, facilitating optimal performance evaluation. The PSI Makerspace benefits by incorporating early sensor development with edge computing and long-range communication technologies like LoRa, essential for effective data acquisition. This collaboration also supports farms with limited bandwidth through Lenovo’s edge computing systems. An exclusive tour of Lenovo’s AI Center of Excellence provided CALS IT with hands-on demonstrations of cutting-edge AI solutions. This partnership aims to position CALS at the forefront of agricultural research excellence, highlighting the power of teamwork within the college.
