OpenResearch, a nonprofit funded by Sam Altman, examines the effects of giving monthly checks to lower-income households and promotes transparency. However, it, along with other Altman-affiliated organizations like OpenAI and UBI Charitable, has decided not to disclose financial and governance information. Despite stating in tax filings that their documents are available upon request, these nonprofits declined to provide WIRED with the requested records. OpenResearch and UBI Charitable claim they share only legally required documents. This lack of transparency is significant given recent accusations against Altman by former OpenAI board members. They allege Altman failed to disclose key information, including the launch of ChatGPT and ownership stakes, and provided inaccurate details on safety protocols. The allegations include fostering a toxic culture and obstructing board oversight. While OpenAI’s new board chair asserts these concerns weren’t about finances, the controversies raise questions about transparency and governance in Altman’s associated entities.
