Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, alongside 43 other state and territory attorneys general, has endorsed the Child Exploitation and Artificial Intelligence Expert Commission Act of 2024. This Act, sponsored by Rep. Nick Langworthy and co-sponsored by a bipartisan 16-member coalition, aims to establish a commission dedicated to improving the detection, prevention, and prosecution of child exploitation crimes involving artificial intelligence. The Act follows a September 2023 letter organized by the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), which received signatures from 54 attorneys general. In addition to this federal initiative, Michigan is advancing state legislation, the Protection from Intimate Deep Fakes Act, to address nonconsensual pornographic deep fakes with new criminal and civil penalties. This legislative package has already passed the Michigan House of Representatives. The bipartisan support for these initiatives spans across states including South Carolina, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, and many others, reflecting a united front in tackling the misuse of AI in child exploitation.
