OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly discussed potential changes to the company’s governance structure with shareholders. The current nonprofit board may relinquish control as OpenAI explores transitioning to a for-profit model. One option under consideration is becoming a for-profit benefit corporation, similar to competitors Anthropic and xAI. However, these discussions are ongoing, and the final decision may differ. OpenAI maintains that the nonprofit aspect remains crucial to its mission. In a separate development, the company has appointed retired Army Gen. Paul Nakasone to its board of directors. Nakasone, former commander of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency, brings expertise in cybersecurity and intelligence. He joins OpenAI’s board following a period of leadership changes and will also serve on the company’s new safety and security committee. This committee aims to advise the board on critical safety and security decisions related to OpenAI’s projects and operations.
