In a bid to combat misinformation, YouTube is introducing a new feature called “Notes” that allows viewers to add context and information under videos. This feature, similar to Community Notes on X (formerly Twitter), aims to provide clarity on videos, such as identifying parodies or clarifying outdated footage. The pilot program will initially be available on mobile in the U.S. in English and will invite a limited number of users to write notes. The feature is particularly timely, given the 2024 U.S. election and the rise of generative AI, which is expected to exacerbate misinformation. While YouTube acknowledges that mistakes may occur during the test phase, it welcomes feedback from users and creators to improve the quality of notes. The company plans to use third-party evaluators to rate the helpfulness and accuracy of notes, which will then be used to train its systems and determine which notes to publish.
