Ecolab, a century-old company specializing in water management, hygiene, and infection prevention, has successfully integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations to optimize water use and maintain safe water environments for millions of customers globally. The company’s chief digital officer, Kevin Doyle, revealed that Ecolab’s associates, mostly chemical engineers, assess clients’ operations to understand their needs and challenges, and then develop tailored programs to drive water and energy savings. However, the company faced a challenge in accessing and utilizing its deep institutional knowledge to help clients. To address this, Ecolab’s AI acceleration lab initiated a project that uses generative AI to document and serve up valuable recommendations to associates, which has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in value creation and potential.
In my opinion, Ecolab’s innovative approach to leveraging AI in water management is a game-changer. By harnessing the power of generative AI, the company is able to tap into its vast knowledge repository, provide more accurate and informed recommendations to clients, and ultimately drive more value for its customers. This is a prime example of how AI can be used to augment human expertise and drive business growth.
