The United Nations has sounded the alarm over the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) technology to spread false information and distortions about World War II atrocities, including the Holocaust. According to a report by UNESCO, the UN’s education and culture body, AI-generated content could lead to an “explosive spread of anti-Semitism” if not properly regulated. The report highlights instances of hackers using chatbots to spread Nazi ideology and AI-generated content that falsifies or distorts historical facts. UNESCO is calling on governments and tech companies to introduce ethical safeguards around AI technology and for schools to educate students about the risks of AI-generated content. This is a pressing concern, as AI tools have already been shown to fail at accurately portraying historical events. If left unchecked, the misuse of AI could lead to a “gradual diminution of our understanding” of the causes and consequences of historical atrocities.
