Elon Musk’s companies seem to have a peculiar talent pipeline, where employees from one company can seamlessly move to another. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the movement of employees from Tesla to xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence startup. At least 10 former Tesla employees have joined xAI, and 18 others have moved to Neuralink, another Musk startup. This has raised concerns that Musk is using Tesla as a pipeline to support his smaller companies, particularly those in need of AI talent. Some have even sued Musk, claiming that he’s diverting AI talent from Tesla to xAI. Musk has used his platform to call for candidates to apply to xAI, stating that he’s “uncomfortable” expanding Tesla’s AI and robotics capabilities without additional voting control. This raises questions about the fate of Tesla’s AI ambitions and whether Musk’s other companies are benefiting at the expense of his flagship company.
