Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is set to offer a new minor in practical artificial intelligence (AI) as part of its curriculum starting this fall. This initiative aims to help students from various academic backgrounds, including journalism and healthcare administration, to gain relevant AI skills and knowledge. The minor will cover essential AI concepts, ethical considerations, and applications in fields like mass media. Fotis Sotiropoulos, the university’s provost, emphasized the importance of adapting the curriculum to meet the demands of the AI era, ensuring that students are prepared for the future job market. The interdisciplinary minor includes courses such as “Essentials of Artificial Intelligence” from the computer science department, “Ethics of Artificial Intelligence” from the philosophy department, and “AI in Mass Media.” To complete the minor, students must take about six classes. VCU also introduced a minor in mixed and immersive reality, which explores topics like virtual crime and the therapeutic use of video games, aiming to provide a comprehensive education that keeps pace with technological advancements. Both minors can be integrated into customized interdisciplinary studies programs, allowing students to tailor their education to their career aspirations.
