Pocket FM, bolstered by $103 million in Series D funding, is partnering with voice cloning company ElevenLabs to convert text into audio series through AI. This collaboration, previously in the experimental phase, produced 30,000 hours of content and is now set to be available to all creators. The AI technology has significantly reduced production costs by 90%, enabling writers to produce audio content 10 times faster. The platform offers 50 voices for conversion, understanding context and emotions in writing. Pocket FM aims to enhance user engagement and discovery algorithms to surface quality content. However, the rise of AI-generated audio poses a threat to voiceover artists, with India’s Association of Voiceover Artists voicing concerns over job security and ethical issues regarding consent. While AI promises efficiency, critics argue it risks diluting the human storytelling experience and flooding the market with lower-quality content. Both Pocket FM and similar platforms like Kuku FM are navigating these complex dynamics without labeling AI-generated content.
