Wordsmith, a legal tech startup based in Edinburgh, has swiftly attracted the backing of notable venture capital firms Index Ventures and General Catalyst, along with Gareth Williams, founder of Skyscanner, securing a $5 million seed investment. Founded by ex-TravelPerk executives Ross McNairn, Robbie Falkenthal, and former Microsoft engineer Volodymyr Giginiak, Wordsmith offers an AI platform designed to assist in-house legal teams and law firms with tasks such as contract review and document queries. The platform, which enables employees to perform legal tasks with the oversight of legal teams, has already garnered notable clients, including Trustpilot and law firm DLA Piper. Wordsmith utilizes foundational large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 to provide precise and responsive legal assistance while ensuring data privacy. With the new funding, Wordsmith aims to expand its workforce in Scotland and the U.S. and further develop its offerings, particularly for small-to-midsize law firms.
