This article highlights a unique professional development opportunity where over 300 educators, including teachers, school and district leaders, higher ed faculty, education consultants, and AI researchers, came together to learn how to use AI and develop their own basic AI tools and resources. The workshop, designed by technology nonprofit Playlab.ai and faculty at the Relay Graduate School of Education, aimed to empower educators to create tailored AI solutions to address specific problems in their classrooms. The result was a range of innovative AI tools, including chatbots, instructional coaches, and writing tutors, designed by teachers to meet the unique needs of their students. What’s remarkable about this initiative is that it puts the power in the hands of educators, allowing them to take control of how AI is used in education and ensuring that the solutions are truly student-centered. As one teacher noted, “we can make stuff that is very tailored to the needs that we have,” which is a refreshing change from the usual top-down approach of education technology companies.

Teachers Take Control of AI in Education
With so many AI tools out there, it can be difficult to find one that meets exactly what you need, but “it’s so easy to just create your own” with coaching and platforms such as Playlab.ai.
