The African Union (AU) has announced a landmark consensus among African ICT and Communications ministers to adopt a Continental AI Strategy, aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address developmental challenges across the continent. The strategy was formulated after a virtual two-day session attended by over 130 ministers and experts, focusing on creating localized AI solutions that cater to Africa’s unique needs while minimizing dependence on Western models. The ministers emphasized inclusivity, urging countries to engage their populations before implementing AI policies to foster widespread adoption. The strategy outlines ambitious plans for AI integration in sectors like education, agriculture, manufacturing, and finance to drive productivity and innovation. Despite lagging behind other regions, African leaders are confident in closing the AI gap through local talent development and international collaborations. Nigeria has already taken proactive steps, recruiting top researchers and forming partnerships to advance its AI framework, demonstrating early success. The AU’s strategy underscores the transformative potential of AI for economic growth and social progress, with a focus on safe and responsible innovation.
