In a fascinating experiment, I utilized artificial intelligence (AI) websites to generate song lyrics and poetry, and was amazed by the programs’ speed and efficiency in producing rhymes and verses in various styles. I requested songs in the style of Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, and John Denver, as well as poems about mourning, God, and redwood trees. While AI was impressive in its ability to quickly generate decent rhymes, it lacked the soulful agency and spiritual self-expression that is inherent in human creativity. As we experiment with AI, we may begin to question the value of human creativity, but it’s essential to remember that human art is not just about generating quick outcomes, but about the agonizing care, personal growth, and soulful process that occurs in art and thought.
