A new analysis by researchers from Harvard Business School, the German Institute for Economic Research, Technische Universität Berlin, and Imperial College Business School reveals a significant shift in the freelance job market due to the emergence of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. The study found a 21 percent drop in job postings for writing and coding roles on a major freelance platform after the launch of ChatGPT. This decline is attributed to the efficiency of AI in handling tasks previously performed by human freelancers. The research highlights that while cognitive tasks are increasingly automated, manual labor jobs have remained stable. In addition to writing and coding, the market for image creation has also been affected, with a 17 percent decrease in job postings due to AI’s capabilities in generating images. The study emphasizes the growing role of AI in automating creative tasks and the impact on freelance job opportunities and earnings. Other research from platforms like Upwork confirms these trends, showing a significant increase in demand for AI-related skills and an internal shift towards AI-driven services and tools.
