The launch of the Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence, co-chaired by Morocco and the United States, marks a significant milestone in the global effort to harness AI for sustainable development. This historic resolution, adopted by the UN General Assembly, defines a global consensus on AI and its potential to support sustainable development. Morocco’s designation as co-chair reflects the country’s credibility and trustworthiness at the UN and international level. The Group aims to galvanize efforts in digital cooperation and AI, discussing common goals and contributions, and exploring the promises of AI for sustainable development. The initiative is crucial for developing countries, particularly in Africa, which need AI to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. I believe that this partnership between Morocco and the US will play a vital role in promoting a balanced approach to AI, ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared equitably and that its risks are mitigated.
