Researchers from Sheffield Hallam University have demonstrated that generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT, can help predict the Bank of England’s interest rate decisions. By analyzing 705 speeches made by Bank policymakers between 1997 and June 2023, they were able to classify each speech as dovish, neutral, or hawkish. The AI correctly predicted interest rate decisions 32% of the time, which is significant given that a 10% accuracy rate is considered robust in social science predictions. The study found that policymakers who gave neutral speeches were more likely to vote for rate hikes in subsequent meetings. The predictive model also took into account additional factors such as the tenure of the Monetary Policy Committee members, their past voting behavior, and whether they were internal or external members of the Bank. The lead researcher, Drew Woodhouse, emphasized the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT in forecasting policy decisions and aiding financial decision-making for the public. The methodology used in this study could also be applied to other areas of central bank communications.
