The Washington State Legislature has established an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Taskforce, with members announced recently. This bipartisan group comprises policymakers, computer scientists, and advocates, including State Senators Joe Nguyen (D) and Matt Boehnke (R), as well as representatives from Microsoft and the ACLU. The taskforce will address AI’s effects on various sectors such as the economy, education, healthcare, public safety, labor, government efficiency, state security, and consumer privacy. They plan to meet twice a year to evaluate AI’s impact and to possibly propose new state regulations. Their findings and regulatory suggestions will be compiled into a report to be submitted to the State Legislature and the Governor’s Office by July 2026. The formation of this taskforce underscores the urgency and importance of managing AI’s rapid advancements, ensuring that legislative measures evolve alongside technological innovation to protect public interests.
