This week, the St. Cloud school district hosted a groundbreaking “thought leaders summit” on artificial intelligence in education, bringing together educators, business leaders, and lawmakers to explore AI’s potential to improve student learning and address concerns such as data breaches and cheating. The event marked the beginning of a crucial conversation on revamping state standards to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Superintendent Laurie Putnam emphasized the need to move beyond the “how to” of AI and focus on the “so what” – how to make education systems relevant to the workforce and future needs. The summit featured keynote speaker Charles Fadel, founder of the Center for Curriculum Redesign, who highlighted the potential of AI to personalize learning and automate tasks, but also stressed the importance of teaching skills AI doesn’t do well, such as entrepreneurship and social sciences. The event’s unique gathering of stakeholders sparked hope for collaboration to drive change in education policy. In my opinion, this conversation is long overdue, and it’s refreshing to see educators, business leaders, and lawmakers coming together to rethink what we want our students to learn to succeed.
