ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is collaborating with U.S. chip designer Broadcom to develop a cutting-edge AI processor. This partnership aims to secure a stable supply of high-end chips for ByteDance amid growing tensions between the United States and China. The project involves creating a 5-nanometer application-specific integrated chip (ASIC) that complies with U.S. export restrictions. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will handle the manufacturing process. This collaboration is significant as it represents one of the first publicly known chip development partnerships between Chinese and U.S. companies involving advanced technology since the implementation of U.S. export controls in 2022. The partnership is expected to help ByteDance reduce procurement costs and ensure a steady supply of sophisticated chips crucial for its AI initiatives. While the design phase is progressing well, production is not anticipated to begin this year. This move highlights ByteDance’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities despite the challenges posed by U.S. export restrictions on advanced chipsets.
