The rapid adoption of generative AI has brought unprecedented attention to its potential in healthcare, but it’s essential to recognize that AI has been quietly advancing the industry for decades. As a physician and leader of a data science team, I’m thrilled to see this broader market awareness, but we must counter the misconception that AI is coming for our jobs and refocus on its practical applications to improve healthcare. Predictive AI has already increased efficiency and dramatically improved operational challenges, and it’s critical we explore how smaller and mid-size hospitals can benefit from AI in operational areas. AI will complement, not replace, healthcare professionals, and by embracing its practical applications, we can ensure healthcare is delivered in a truly person-centric manner.
