The California Department of Technology (CDT) has introduced new requirements for vendors selling products with generative AI components to state agencies. In an online session, officials clarified that vendors must complete a Form 1000 for each piece of technology they are trying to sell or resell, which will help identify where GenAI is or will be in use throughout state agencies. This move is seen as a step towards transparency and accountability in AI procurement. While some vendors may be concerned about the additional paperwork, officials reassured that the form is not intended to disqualify products using GenAI, but rather to ensure responsible use of the technology. The new guidance and updated form will be issued on July 1, and agencies will also be required to conduct risk self-assessments for GenAI systems and consult with CDT staff for moderate- and high-risk use cases. Overall, this move is a positive step towards responsible AI adoption in the state’s procurement process.
