EvolutionaryScale, a pioneering startup, has successfully raised $142 million in a seed funding round led by notable figures such as ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, with additional investment from Amazon and Nvidia’s NVentures. The company, founded by former Meta AI researchers, aims to leverage AI to generate novel proteins for scientific applications like drug discovery and materials science. Their latest AI model, ESM3, trained on a dataset of 2.78 billion proteins, can predict protein sequences and structures, potentially revolutionizing the process of protein engineering. EvolutionaryScale has already demonstrated the model’s capabilities by creating a new variant of green fluorescent protein. While the company plans to monetize through partnerships and usage fees, it might take a decade to see profitable therapeutic designs. With backing from tech giants and an ambitious vision, EvolutionaryScale is poised to push the boundaries of AI in biotechnology.
