After decades in software, I’ve transitioned to the energy management sector, discovering a deep connection between software and industry solutions. This shift has led me to explore literature on related topics, including Ernest Scheyder’s “The War Below.” The book delves into the critical role of lithium and copper in powering modern technology, especially in batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Scheyder’s journalistic expertise shines through in his balanced narrative, blending facts with compelling stories. He emphasizes the environmental trade-offs of mining these essential materials, highlighting the outdated laws and technologies that govern their extraction. The book also touches on the geopolitical ramifications of resource dependency and the U.S.’s neglected diplomatic strategies. While the book is thorough, it leaves room for discussing potential regulatory changes to foster more sustainable mining practices. Overall, “The War Below” is a thought-provoking read on the complexities of the global energy landscape.
