Axelera AI, a Dutch AI hardware startup, has secured $68 million in Series B funding, marking Europe’s largest Series B round for a fabless semiconductor company. This significant investment, led by prominent institutional backers such as Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund and Samsung Catalyst Fund, will enable Axelera to expand its AI processing units (AIPUs) to new markets and enhance its product offerings. Axelera, spun out from Bitfury Group in 2021, focuses on AI acceleration for edge computing applications, with its flagship Metis platform combining a 12nm CMOS AIPU and a software development kit to streamline computer vision inference. Metis’s AIPUs feature four AI cores that can process different neural networks concurrently, offering high throughput and energy efficiency. With this funding, Axelera aims to scale production, meet the growing demand for AI solutions, and extend its reach to North America, Europe, and the Middle East, targeting industries like automotive and digital healthcare.
