Google has announced that its new Gemma 2 lightweight model series will be available to researchers and developers via Vertex AI starting next month. Unveiled initially with a 27-billion parameter model, Google surprised the AI community by also including a 9-billion parameter version. Gemma 2, introduced in May at Google I/O, is designed to operate on Nvidia’s latest GPUs or a single TPU host, targeting developers who want to incorporate AI into various applications, from smartphones to IoT devices. Benchmarked against Meta’s Llama 3 and Grok-1, Gemma 2 offers a versatile and customizable solution for different user needs. Additionally, Google plans to release a 2.6-billion parameter model soon, aimed at balancing accessibility and performance. Gemma 2 models are accessible via Google AI Studio, with model weights available on Kaggle and Hugging Face. Researchers can also utilize Gemma 2 for free through Kaggle or the free tier for Colab notebooks.
