Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced that the company will start surfacing AI characters created by users through Meta AI studio on Instagram, with tests beginning in the U.S. This move comes on the same day as Character.AI, a chatbot company backed by a16z, rolls out the ability for users to engage with AI avatars over calls. According to Zuckerberg, these chatbots will be clearly labeled as AI to ensure user awareness. The initial test will involve around 50 creators and a small percentage of users, with plans to roll it out to more people over the next couple of months, aiming for a full launch by August. The AI avatars will primarily appear in messaging, and creators like Wasted and Don Allen Stevenson III have already created early versions of chatbots. Zuckerberg envisions these AI avatars as a means for creators to engage with fans, as they often don’t have the time to respond to all incoming messages. However, he acknowledges that the quality of these AI avatars will evolve and improve over time, becoming an “art form” that requires experimentation to find the most engaging and entertaining formula.
