The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a gradual process spanning over 70 years, with each generation building upon the previous one. From Alan Turing’s proposal of the imitation game in 1950 to the current advancements in machine learning and neural networks, AI has come a long way. However, despite the rapid progress, AI is still far from achieving consciousness. The article takes a historical approach to understanding AI, highlighting its evolution from expert systems to machine learning and finally to the current generation of transformer networks. The author argues that AI’s trajectory is firmly towards greater capacity, reliability, and accuracy, rather than towards consciousness. The future of AI looks bright, with a range of techniques being utilized, including symbolic AI, which allows for the incorporation of human knowledge and perspectives.
