Google Translate has expanded its language offerings by adding 110 new languages, marking its largest ever update. This achievement was made possible through the advanced capabilities of Google’s PaLM 2 large language model (LLM). The new languages include both widely spoken ones like Cantonese and lesser-known tongues such as Manx, a Celtic language from the Isle of Man. In total, these additions account for over 614 million speakers, encompassing around 8% of the global population. A significant portion of the new languages, about a quarter, come from Africa, including languages like Fon, Kikongo, and Wolof. The inclusion of Cantonese, long requested by users, was a notable milestone due to its complexity in overlapping with Mandarin. Google’s AI-driven approach has also enabled the addition of languages like Afar, a tonal language spoken in parts of Africa, and Tok Pisin, the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea. This expansion is part of Google’s broader 1,000 Languages Initiative, aimed at supporting the world’s most-spoken languages through continuous AI advancements. As Google’s technology evolves, the company plans to integrate even more languages, enhancing global communication and accessibility.
