The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement. This legal action follows similar lawsuits from The New York Times, which has already spent $1 million, and other media outlets. CIR claims that OpenAI and Microsoft used their stories to enhance their products without permission or compensation, undermining CIR’s relationships with readers and partners and depriving the nonprofit of revenue. The lawsuit adds to the growing number of legal challenges faced by OpenAI and Microsoft from various media organizations, including those owned by Alden Global Capital and other independent publications like The Intercept and Raw Story. Additionally, groups of authors, including comedian Sarah Silverman, have also taken legal action, although some aspects of their lawsuit were dismissed. OpenAI has stated that it is working with the news industry to display content with proper attribution and drive traffic back to original articles. However, OpenAI and Microsoft have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
