The University of Alabama has opened the Alabama Center for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (ALA-AI), a state-of-the-art research hub within the College of Engineering. This initiative, backed by a $2 million donation in honor of Dr. Marvin A. Griffin, aims to centralize and expand AI-related research, education, and outreach across the campus. Dr. Clifford Henderson, Dean of the College of Engineering, emphasized that the center would be pivotal in advancing AI science, promoting human-centered applications, ensuring ethical AI practices, and fostering a proficient AI workforce. ALA-AI will collaborate with various colleges on campus and align strategically with the High Performance Computing and Data Center and the Alabama Cyber Institute. Dr. Jiaqi Gong will serve as the inaugural director, with Dr. Sergei Gleyzer and Dr. Hee Yun Lee as co-directors. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, ALA-AI aims to address pressing AI challenges and opportunities, reinforcing UA’s leadership in AI research and innovation.
