The Malaysian police are sounding the alarm over the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by criminal groups for malicious purposes. The Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director, Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, warned that AI is being employed to create deep fakes, voice spoofing, and financial market manipulation. A recent example is a deepfake video featuring a Malaysian leader endorsing a get-rich-quick scheme, which is actually an investment scam. Ramli emphasized that AI is already being used to take over tasks previously done by humans and that the police anticipate syndicates will employ AI in their unlawful activities targeting Malaysians as early as 2024. He highlighted the risks of AI being used in sophisticated video and audio manipulation, potential identity theft, and the production of deepfake videos. Ramli urged the public to be aware of the potential risks of AI and to be cautious, as knowledge and awareness are the best weapons against AI-powered crimes.
