The General Services Administration (GSA) has introduced a new framework aimed at expediting the FedRAMP cloud authorization process for emerging technologies, with a special emphasis on generative AI. This initiative, mandated by the Biden administration’s 2023 executive order on artificial intelligence, prioritizes vendors offering AI capabilities such as chat interfaces, code-generation and debugging tools, and prompt-based image generators. Additionally, the framework will fast-track general-purpose API offerings that integrate these AI capabilities. Vendors can submit the required forms until August 31, with selected technologies to be announced by September 30. The goal is to include up to twelve AI-based cloud services, roughly three per prioritized capability, in the FedRAMP Marketplace. GSA will accept submissions biannually, evaluating requests based on qualifying and demand criteria. The prioritized list will be updated annually, reflecting new technological advancements and needs. This is the first instance where FedRAMP will prioritize one technology over another, shifting from its traditional first-in, first-out approach. GSA’s executive director for cloud strategy, Eric Mill, emphasized that this framework aims to enhance government service delivery and operational efficiency by leveraging cutting-edge technologies.
