The US Department of Defense’s Joint Staff is considering the creation of a new Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer to spearhead Chairman of the Joint Staff C.Q. Brown’s digital modernization campaign. This move aims to revamp the department’s digital capabilities, infrastructure, and workforce. The campaign’s implementation involves developing a digitally enabled workforce, strengthening infrastructure, and rapidly adopting artificial intelligence tools and capabilities. Lt. Gen David Isaacson, director of C4 and Chief Information Officer of the J-6, expressed optimism about the potential for growth, citing the presence of “digital natives” among servicemembers who can drive modernization. However, he acknowledged the department’s reputation for slow adoption of new technology, emphasizing the need for better partnership with industry partners. The creation of a new digital chief position could be a significant step towards overcoming this hurdle and driving innovation within the DoD.
