Ukraine has emerged as a significant player in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Central and Eastern Europe, hosting over 200 AI companies. According to the Ministry of Finance, Ukraine ranks second in the region, trailing only Poland, which boasts 301 AI companies. Major Ukrainian cities like Kyiv and Lviv are home to the majority of these companies, with Kyiv alone housing 177 AI startups. Notable AI startups like Grammarly, Preply, and People.ai have their roots in Ukraine, and the country has produced two AI ‘unicorns’ valued collectively at over $14.5 billion. The number of AI and machine learning specialists in Ukraine has quintupled over the past decade, now standing at 5,200 professionals. Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov forecasts a 330% increase in this workforce in the coming years. However, to sustain this growth, Ukraine needs to overhaul its education system and foster collaboration between universities and AI companies. Funding for Ukrainian AI startups surged by 35% in 2023, reflecting the sector’s robust potential. Despite challenges like ongoing conflicts, the Ukrainian AI sector shows promise, provided that legal and educational reforms are implemented.
